World Population Day: Beyond the numbers
11 July 2025
NTC-supported dialogue highlighted how young people should participate in development planning and how the Parish Development Model can respond to health, rights and opportunity.
World Population Day is an opportunity to look beyond population totals and focus on people's quality of life, dignity, rights and freedom to make informed choices. For women and young people, those issues are inseparable from access to health information, responsive services and meaningful participation in development.
Uganda's 2025 commemoration explored how the Parish Development Model could contribute to improved health and socio-economic outcomes through inclusive service delivery at community level.
With support from UNFPA, NTC organised and participated in activities leading up to the national event, including a school debate, a hybrid youth dialogue and youth engagement during the commemoration. Across the discussions, one message remained consistent: plans and policies are stronger when young people help shape them.
Participants reflected on how local-development structures can improve health outcomes, strengthen economic opportunity and respond to the barriers young people face. They also called for youth-friendly communication, inclusive participation and accountability for the services intended to reach adolescents and young adults.
Key takeaway: Plan with young people, not only for them. Their knowledge, priorities and leadership are essential to inclusive and sustainable development.
