Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) remain at the heart of Uganda’s fight against HIV. In 2024, they accounted for about one-third of the 37,000 new HIV infections, highlighting their particular vulnerability and the urgent need for targeted interventions. Protecting their health is not just a medical priority. it is essential for safeguarding their dreams, opportunities, and future.

Understanding the Vulnerability of AGYW

Young women face unique challenges that increase their risk of HIV infection. These include limited access to sexual and reproductive health services, gender inequality, economic dependence, early marriages, and exposure to gender-based violence. Social and cultural norms can further restrict their ability to seek information or negotiate safe practices, leaving many at risk.

Addressing these vulnerabilities requires interventions that go beyond treatment. Prevention, education, empowerment, and mentorship are key to creating long-term change in the lives of AGYW.

Strengthening Efforts Through Partnerships

Uganda is working with government institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners to scale up programs that protect AGYW. These include:

Comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education

Access to HIV prevention services, including testing, treatment, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)

Economic empowerment initiatives, such as skills training and livelihood programs

Mentorship and community engagement to challenge harmful practices and promote safe behaviors

By combining health services with education and empowerment, these interventions help AGYW make informed choices, reduce vulnerability, and advocate for their rights.

Empowering the Next Generation

Empowerment is central to the response. When AGYW gain confidence, knowledge, and financial independence, they are better equipped to protect themselves from HIV, avoid risky behaviors, and lead healthy lives. Empowered young women also become role models for their peers, inspiring positive change within communities.

Looking Ahead

Focusing on AGYW is crucial to achieving a sustainable HIV response in Uganda. Through partnerships, targeted programs, and community engagement, the country is strengthening its efforts to reduce new infections and ensure young women can thrive.

By prioritizing their health, dreams, and futures, we are investing in a generation of strong, resilient girls who can lead Uganda toward a healthier and more equitable future.https://x.com/NaguruC/status/1978342234316591557
