Education is about more than textbooks, it’s about empowering young people to make informed decisions, build resilience, and thrive. At Sseke Secondary School, our recent Behavior Change Communication (BCC) outreach went beyond traditional learning, equipping students with critical knowledge and practical skills that will shape their futures.

Accurate SRHR and HIV Information

A key focus of the outreach was providing accurate sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV information. Misconceptions and myths about reproductive health, HIV transmission, and prevention often lead to risky behavior, stigma, and missed opportunities for care. By sharing evidence-based information, students gained the knowledge needed to make informed health choices, protect themselves, and support their peers.

Skills for Positive Health-Seeking Behaviors

Knowledge alone is not enough. Our sessions emphasized practical skills that encourage positive health-seeking behaviors, such as knowing where and when to access services, communicating effectively with health providers, and adopting safe practices. These skills empower adolescents to take responsibility for their health, reducing risks associated with HIV, unplanned pregnancies, and other reproductive health challenges.

Building a Foundation of Gender Equity

The outreach also focused on promoting gender equity and male involvement. Students explored the importance of mutual respect, equality, and shared responsibility in health and community life. Engaging boys and young men alongside girls ensures that everyone participates in creating a culture of dignity, support, and empowerment. This holistic approach strengthens communities and fosters long-term change.

Empowering Learners for a Healthier Future

By combining knowledge, skills, and values, the outreach equips students to take control of their futures. Adolescents leave the sessions not just with information, but with confidence, practical tools, and a sense of agency to make healthier choices and advocate for themselves and others. They become ambassadors for change, influencing peers and contributing to safer, more informed communities.

Moving Forward

The BCC outreach at Sseke SS demonstrates the power of education beyond textbooks. By integrating SRHR knowledge, practical skills, and gender equity principles, we empower young people to build healthier, safer, and more equitable futures. When youth are informed, confident, and supported, they can break cycles of misinformation and risk, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.https://x.com/NaguruC/status/1971238229400514845
