Skilling is a powerful tool in the fight against HIV and Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Recently, our team paid a courtesy visit to St. Joseph’s Institute in Kamuli District, where more than 50 young mothers have been enrolled in tailoring and hairdressing programs. This initiative equips them with practical livelihood skills, empowering them to become financially independent and reducing their vulnerability to HIV and GBV.
Skills as a Path to Empowerment
Economic empowerment is closely linked to health and safety. Young mothers who have limited financial resources often face higher risks of exploitation, unsafe relationships, and exposure to HIV. By providing vocational skills such as tailoring and hairdressing, these young women gain opportunities to earn income, make informed choices, and gain confidence in their abilities.
The training programs also provide safe spaces for learning, peer support, and mentorship. Beyond technical skills, participants develop critical life skills, such as decision-making, negotiation, and self-advocacy, which are essential for reducing risks and fostering independence.
Strengthening Communities
Empowered young mothers not only improve their own lives but also contribute to stronger, healthier communities. As they gain income and confidence, they become role models for peers, inspiring other young women to pursue skills and education. This ripple effect strengthens community resilience and promotes awareness about HIV prevention and GBV.
A Holistic Approach
The initiative at St. Joseph’s Institute demonstrates the importance of combining livelihood skills with health education and mentorship. Providing young mothers with tools to earn a living is only part of the solution—equipping them with knowledge about HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and rights ensures they can protect themselves and make empowered choices.
Looking Ahead
Programs like these highlight the importance of supporting Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) through skills development, mentorship, and comprehensive education. By investing in their potential, we are creating a generation of strong, self-reliant girls who are better protected against HIV and GBV.
We are inspired by the dedication of the young mothers at St. Joseph’s Institute and remain committed to expanding initiatives that empower girls, reduce vulnerability, and build a brighter future.https://x.com/NaguruC/status/1978435233528623567
