Every young person has the right to quality, respectful, and inclusive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Ensuring that these rights are not just theoretical requires accountability, community engagement, and active participation by the youth themselves. Recently, at Bwesumbu Health Centre III in Kasese District, our micro consultative and interface meetings provided a platform for young people to raise their voices, address barriers, and speak out against gender-based violence (GBV).
Making SRH Services Youth-Friendly
Young people often face challenges in accessing SRH services, including stigma, lack of confidentiality, unfriendly service delivery, and societal taboos. These barriers can prevent them from seeking the care they need, increasing vulnerability to health risks and limiting opportunities for informed decision-making. By holding consultative meetings at local health facilities, we ensure that youth perspectives are central to planning and delivering services.
Micro Consultative and Interface Meetings
The meetings at Bwesumbu HC III brought together adolescents, health workers, community leaders, and youth advocates. Participants discussed real-life challenges, shared experiences, and co-created solutions for improving service delivery. The sessions emphasized:
- Strengthening confidentiality and privacy in SRH services
- Addressing community misconceptions and stigma around adolescent health
- Preventing and responding to GBV
- Enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in health programs
These interactive sessions empower young people to actively participate in shaping the services they rely on fostering a sense of ownership and accountability within the community.
Youth Accountability Drives Change
When young people are engaged in monitoring, feedback, and advocacy, health systems become more responsive and inclusive. Amplifying youth voices ensures that services are not only available but also effective, respectful, and equitable. By highlighting gaps and holding service providers accountable, adolescents help improve health outcomes and create safer environments for their peers.
Looking Forward
The Bwesumbu HC III consultative meetings are part of a larger effort under the #SpotlightInitiative to enhance adolescent health services across Uganda. By continuing to listen to, empower, and collaborate with young people, we move closer to a future where every adolescent has access to the SRH care they deserve free from stigma, discrimination, and violence.https://x.com/NaguruC/status/1975862173105586629
