Access to essential health services is a critical factor in improving the well-being of communities. Recently, we conducted a successful community outreach at Kyabazala Ntunda Subcounty, Mukono, bringing vital sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services directly to the people. Initiatives like this ensure that young people, women, and other vulnerable groups can access care without barriers such as distance, cost, or stigma.
Services Offered During the Outreach
During the outreach, community members were provided with a range of free services, including:
- HIV testing and counseling, helping individuals know their status and access treatment if needed
- Family planning services, enabling informed choices about reproductive health
- Other sexual and reproductive health services, including education on safe practices and preventive care
By offering these services in a community setting, the outreach program reduces barriers to access and promotes health-seeking behavior, particularly among Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) who may face challenges reaching health facilities.
Engaging the Community
Community outreach is not just about providing services ,it’s about building trust, awareness, and engagement. During the event, health workers interacted with participants, answered questions, and shared information on disease prevention, safe sexual practices, and available health resources. These interactions empower community members to take charge of their health and make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
Impact on Health and Wellbeing
Bringing health services closer to communities strengthens early detection, prevention, and treatment of health conditions, ultimately improving overall health outcomes. For young people, especially AGYW, access to SRH services is essential in reducing the risk of HIV infection, unplanned pregnancies, and other reproductive health challenges. It also promotes confidence and independence by enabling informed decision-making.
Moving Forward
The Kyabazala Ntunda outreach is part of a larger commitment to ensure equitable access to quality health services across Mukono and beyond. By continuing these community-based initiatives, we aim to reach more people, empower adolescents and young women, and build healthier communities.
Bringing health services closer to the people is more than a program, it’s a step toward a future where every individual has the information, resources, and support needed to thrive.https://x.com/NaguruC/status/1974374266712871276
