In a major step toward improving HIV services for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW), we partnered with Uganda AIDS Commission, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Sports, Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, and UNICEF Uganda to kick off onsite mentorship and supervision in the districts of Kamuli, Namayingo, and Mukono.
Building Capacity at Every Level
The initiative focuses on enhancing the capacity of schools, health facilities, and communities to deliver quality, adolescent-friendly HIV services. By providing hands-on mentorship, technical guidance, and practical supervision, the program ensures that service providers are well-equipped to meet the unique needs of AGYW.
Schools play a critical role in educating young people about HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health. Health facilities provide access to testing, treatment, and counseling services. Communities reinforce positive behaviors and protective practices. By strengthening all these levels simultaneously, the program creates a holistic support system for young women.
Onsite Mentorship and Supervision
The onsite approach allows mentors to observe service delivery, provide immediate feedback, and share best practices tailored to local contexts. Staff receive guidance on maintaining confidentiality, offering empathetic care, and improving record-keeping and reporting. This approach helps to improve the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of HIV services for adolescent girls and young women.
Collaboration for Greater Impact
The partnership between government institutions and international organizations ensures that interventions are coordinated, evidence-based, and sustainable. Each partner brings unique expertise:
- Uganda AIDS Commission: Strategic leadership and oversight
- Ministry of Health: Clinical guidance and service standards
- Ministry of Education and Sports: Integration of HIV education in schools
- Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development: Community mobilization and youth engagement
- UNICEF Uganda: Technical support and capacity building
Looking Ahead
Through this initiative, AGYW in Kamuli, Namayingo, and Mukono will have better access to high-quality HIV services, education, and support systems. Onsite mentorship strengthens service delivery, builds local capacity, and ensures that young women receive care that is friendly, confidential, and responsive to their needs.
By investing in schools, health facilities, and communities, Uganda is making strides toward a future where every adolescent girl and young woman can protect her health, make informed choices, and thrive.https://x.com/NaguruC/status/1978342265106886891
